Krystal Larsosa is a child- and youth-development professional who set her career aside to focus on community, home and her family’s business interests. She was born and raised in Detroit and educated in Detroit public schools. She attended Eastern Michigan University, where she earned a degree in criminal justice. Her work experience comprises mostly of organizing safe play, interactive learning, and treatment-based activities within the juvenile justice system, the church, and DPSCD. She was also an understudy and employee of the highly regarded former U.S. Congresswoman Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick. “She’s a kind, ethical, professional and effective woman,” Larsosa said of her former mentor and boss.
Larsosa attributes relationships like these to her understanding of and commitment to family and community. As a result of her sacrifice and attention, Larsosa’s three daughters—known collectively at ages 15, 13, and 5 as the HerSheKissis—are straight A students and cultural influencers in their own right. Followed by almost 300k Instagram users, their platform celebrates the brilliance and beauty of Black people, and Black girls in particular. In 2020, Larsosa and her family secured a national contract with Verizon Wireless. And currently, the girls are modeling for a DPSCD campaign geared to bring more students into the district.
Larsosa has used her management company to engage youth in the political process by creating employment for them since 2013. She leads new community organizing efforts to connect residents in the 28 residential blocks around her home within the Greenfield, Schoolcraft, and Grandriver corridors surrounding her family’s home.
“When we bought our home just about 5 years ago, we knocked all the doors on our block not only to introduce ourselves, but also to connect the existing and future residents to one another”, Larsosa said. Larsoa neighbors have been able to attract resources as a result of her family’s relationships and influence, so since then, they have been in contact with other block leaders to explore possibilities for a new community association.
Larsosa bought a brand-new RV during the pandemic and enjoys traveling during the family’s downtime. “My husband and I grew up really poor not far from where we live now,” said Larsosa. “Recently, God has been good to us and we’ve been adamant about staying here in the city. We love our neighbors who share and understand our stories. I prefer to keep a low profile and never aspired to public office. But in the end, I couldn’t refuse the call of the community to extend the good fortune afforded to my family to all of D1 and Detroit” Larsosa said.
