Krystal Larsosa released the following statement:
The city of Detroit can offer all the power and possibility that moved us when we saw the fictional place of Wakanda. We are home to heroines and heroes, activists, entrepreneurs, artists, and influencers and we have the opportunity to attract more from across the country. Black people in America deserve a national home… a place we can safely raise our children but also where we can be proud of our connection to one another and where we are able to prosper and create new futures together. As the country’s largest majority Black city, Detroit can be that place. I am asking for your support and your vote in my bid for Council for three basic reasons:- Improved Neighborhoods: Detroit deserves neighborhoods that are clean, safe, and prosperous. To accomplish this, we need leaders who are as invested in the neighborhoods as those of us who live here. As someone who was raised and is now raising children here on Detroit’s west side, I am such a leader.
- New Voices: We all deserve to have our voices heard through the political process, not just those of us who own businesses or vote in every election. Detroit has huge populations of young people, of homeless people, and of folks who have been touched by the criminal legal system and can add so much insight for the improvement of our systems if we will only seek them out.
- New Inspiration: Black people, especially young people, deserve to be inspired, to have our experiences represented at decision-making tables, and to see ourselves reflected in positions of power. Everyday folks deserve to know that their lived experience alone qualifies them as agents of change, not their political savvy or advanced degrees. We are the change we wish to see.
